In 1989, Mark Paigen founded the company that would become Chaco. A whitewater-rafting guide, Paigen found himself looking for, and being unable to find, the perfect pair of river sandals — footwear that was sturdy, adjustable, fashionable, able to dry quickly and full of traction to provide leverage during rough whitewater runs. He named the first sandals he made Geckos and produced them in his Paonia, Colorado, home. Two years later, Paigen changed the name of the company to Chaco to commemorate the Chaco Culture National Historic Park in New Mexico.
